Knowledge production and firm growth in Brazil

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to gauge the impact of the production of knowledge on the accumulation of fixed capital in Brazil. The hypothesis is that investment in R&D causes investment in fixed capital in Brazilian industrial firms. The empirical estimates rest on an IPEA database for information on firms and the workers linked to these firms during the period 1996-2003 and on the National Innovation Survey (PINTEC) for information on technological development. In the article, various estimates are made using three empirical procedures. First, the firms that grew most and invested most are described. Second, econometric models relating R&D expenditures, technological innovation and the accumulation of fixed capital are estimated. A model having five equations and a structure similar to that of CDM models is estimated. The system employs instrumental variables to correct for endogeneity and solves the selection problem by including a firm-survival equation. Third, the causal relations between R&D and investment in fixed capital are sought through contrafactual analysis and a difference model. The results support the initial hypothesis, indicating that investments in R&D lead to an average 17% increase in investments in fixed capital among Brazilian firms.firm growth, knowledge production, R&D, innovation, simultaneous equation models

Evolving Recursive Programs using Non-recursive Scaffolding

    Get PDF
Genetic programming has proven capable of evolving solutions to a wide variety of problems. However, the successes have largely been with programs without iteration or recursion; evolving recursive programs has turned out to be particularly challenging. The main obstacle to evolving recursive programs seems to be that they are particularly fragile to the application of search operators: a small change in a correct recursive program generally produces a completely wrong program. In this paper, we present a simple and general method that allows us to pass back and forth from a recursive program to an associated non-recursive program. Finding a recursive program can be reduced to evolving non-recursive programs followed by converting the optimum non-recursive program found to the associated optimum recursive program. This avoids the fragility problem above, as evolution does not search the space of recursive programs. We present promising experimental results on a test-bed of recursive problems

An analysis of a didactical experience in science teacher preparation

    Get PDF
What follows is the description of a didactical experience whose results were considered more successful than expected. Future biology teachers not only became involved in the course and learned scientific and pedagogical knowledge, but also changed their relationship with it, assuming the responsability to solve a problem with all they creativity. The experience will be analized and interpreted by means of “quasi-psychoanalytical” categories which consider the changes in the relation between student, teacher and knowledge and the instruments the teacher used to foster them

Time Series components separation based on Singular Spectral Analysis visualization: an HJ-biplot method application

    Get PDF
The extraction of essential features of any real-valued time series is crucial for exploring, modeling and producing, for example, forecasts. Taking advantage of the representation of a time series data by its trajectory matrix of Hankel constructed using Singular Spectrum Analysis, as well as of its decomposition through Principal Component Analysis via Partial Least Squares, we implement a graphical display employing the biplot methodology. A diversity of types of biplots can be constructed depending on the two matrices considered in the factorization of the trajectory matrix. In this work, we discuss the called HJ-biplot which yields a simultaneous representation of both rows and columns of the matrix with maximum quality. Interpretation of this type of biplot on Hankel related trajectory matrices is discussed from a real-world data set.publishe

Our starting point is the Gutsunaev-Manko axisymmetric solution describing massive magnetic dipoles in general relativity, from which we obtain a continuous three-parameter family of asymptotically flat static magnetized disks with finite mass and energy. For strong magnetic fields, the disk surface density profile resembles some well-known self-gravitating ringlike structures. We show that many of these solutions can be indeed stable and, hence, they could be in principle useful for the study of the abundant astrophysical situations involving disks of matter and magnetic fields9512110CNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFAPERJ - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIROFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA E DESENVOLVIMENTO DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOCNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFAPERJ - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIROFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA E DESENVOLVIMENTO DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOsem informaçãoE-26/200.279/2015 , 2013/09357-

This work presents the case of a high school Biology teacher that had as investigative focus her own educational practice and analyzed the terms that allowed the research to be joined to teaching. The teacher 's practice was collected with audiovisual recordings and a personal logbook. The research and teaching developments could advance thanks to the effort and persistent of the researcher in using the research methodology, was also able to incorporate objective aspects as well as subjective ones with regard to educational practice
